What is haptics? | know more about haptics
what is haptics? Haptics is the science and technique of transmitting and understanding information through touch. Robert Blenkinsopp, VP Engineering at Ultraleap, tells you everything you need to know.
At its most basic, "haptic" means anything related to the sense of touch. (It is derived from the Greek word for touch.)
relating to the sense of bit, above all about the perception and manipulation of objects victimization the senses of bit and interoception.

the use of technology that stimulates the senses of bit and motion, particularly to breed in remote operation or framework the sensations that might be felt by a user interacting directly with physical objects.

2
the perception of objects by bit and interoception, particularly as concerned in nonverbal communication.
haptics is that system of nonlanguage communication that conveys that means through physical contact
The definition of "haptics" in science and technology is more precise though. This relates to the use of tactile sensations in interfaces. Haptics is the science and technique of transmitting and understanding information through the sense of touch.
Perhaps the best-known examples of haptics are vibrations in mobile phones or thunder in game controllers, but there are actually a huge variety of applications: wearables, AR / VR experiences, digital out-of-home advertising, automotive infotainment, and high-end military. And industrial simulation tools, just to name a few.
Haptics, haptic feedback and haptic technology
Haptics are often used interchangeably with haptic technology (specific techniques that simulate tactile sensations) and haptic feedback (the way touch is used to communicate with users).
However, while the terms are closely related, they are not exactly the same. Haptics is a really broad category that includes both the physiology and neurology of touch as well as haptic techniques and haptic responses.
Haptics and sense of touch
We consistently underestimate the importance of touch. After vision it is the second most important way of understanding, exploring and interacting with the world.

Touch is like an extra set of our eyes. This gives us a rich 360 ° field of perception that complements our high-definition, but also limited field of vision. It is also fundamentally connected to our body's sense of ownership and presence, and intimately connected to the way we communicate emotions.
People are just waking up to haptics
Until recently, however, our use of tactile sense in interfaces was very limited.
People are just waking up to how important haptics can be. Every important producer of electronic equipment is now seriously investing in haptics, from consumer electronics all the way to heavy industrial machinery.
Types of haptic technology
While the most well-known haptic technology is probably the small motors used to produce vibrations in mobile phones, game controllers, and wearables, there are many other variants.
These include microfluidics, friction modulation, and the use of levers or other mechanical devices to apply force to the user's body or organs.
Not all haptic technology also requires users to be in contact with the surface. Contactless haptic technology completely eliminates the need for wearables or controllers. It uses techniques such as ultrasound or laser to produce tactile sensations in mid-air.
Ultraleap's haptic technology falls into this category
Haptics for applications
In interaction design, for example, you add haptics not to enhance realism but to improve the user experience. There is much evidence (see our study of automotive infotainment control for example) that adding haptics reduces completion time and error rates. Users consistently prefer interfaces that include haptics.
Other reasons include adding haptics when visual or auditory channels are busy, and its use as an alternative channel of communication as an emotional component of touch. This is particularly important in applications such as marketing and immersive entertainment.
The potential for haptics is unlimited
Video by Tima Miroshnichenko from PexelsThe sense of touch is a new way for humans and machines to communicate, and the potential of haptics is unlimited. Touch is a language we all intuitively understand, but no one has written a dictionary yet. It is very exciting to be part of something so dynamic and cutting-edge.
So now you shall know about what is haptics. Please comment and share.
